Paddle away with us! Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) with an afternoon of family fun--filled with pests, potpourri, and plenty of activities!
Tickets: $10 per person. $8 for all MOCA Dual and Individual Level Members.
Free for MOCA Family Level Members and above, children under 2, and Cool Culture families.

Workshops and More!
Calligraphy Corner | 12-4pm
Join expert calligrapher I-Hsuan Chao as she demonstrates this traditional art form by painting festive messages on traditional rice paper. Learn simple brushstroke techniques and how to write the Chinese character for boat 舟.
Sticky, Savory Snacks: Zongzi Wrapping and Tasting 12:30-4pm
Learn why zongzi—delicious, pyramid-shaped rice balls wrapped in bamboo leaves—are eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival. Practice drying and folding bamboo leaves, filling them with rice, and tying them together with string. Then tickle your taste buds with a piece of mouthwatering zongzi!
Awaken the Dragon! | 1pm & 2pm
Get energized for the festivities with a special reading of Susan Hughes’ Gung Ho! A Dragon Boat Story. Then explore the roles of dragon boat crewmembers with an interactive activity sure to keep you on your toes.
Design Away with Kam Mak | 1-3:30pm
Design your own dragon boat paddle with artist and illustrator Kam Mak, author of My Chinatown. Use mixed media to create classic and original patterns.
Drop-In Arts and Crafts, 12-4pm
Positively Potpourri Stuff and tie a festive fabric sachet (xiang bao) with dried flowers and herbs that are sure to please the senses. Use it as a good luck charm!
Pesky Pests Also called the Double Fifth Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival is considered one of the unluckiest days of the year. Use clothespins, felt, googly eyes and more to create your
own versions of the five poisonous pests--the snake, scorpion, centipede, toad and spider. How creepy will they be?
Paddles Up! Design a miniature dragon boat from natural and everyday materials. Will your boat be seaworthy? Race it in the water to find out— races held every half hour!
Make Waves with the Paper Kids Make origami boats with Paper Kids, a youth club recognized by the Origami USA Association. Learn how to make different types of boats and see if they will float!

Legends Story Time | 1pm & 2:30pm
Travel back in time over 2,000 years as you follow Qu Yuan, a fabled poet, through his journeys, and learn how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be.
Creepy Crawly Bug Hunt | 1:30pm & 3pm
Join MOCA on a gallery hunt to drive away the five poisonous pests and protect the museum. Bring your xiang bao for good luck!
