When a 19-year-old American soldier from Manhattan Chinatown was found dead on a U.S. Army base in Afghanistan after relentless, racist hazing by his supervisors, community leaders immediately mobilized and embarked on a multiyear campaign to demand justice for Private Danny Chen and his family. WHAT HAPPENED TO DANNY, a documentary film in the making by Mansee Kong, follows the Chinese Community response to Danny’s case and subsequent legal action, and in the process offers a model of advocacy and activism.
The filmmaker Mansee Kong, civil rights attorney Liz Ouyang, and Danny's cousin Banny will talk with us about the idea behind the film, the ins and outs of Danny's case, and the ways in which it can raise awareness about racism beyond the Chinese American community. This is one good way in which we can partner with a Chinese American community effort.
Donations for the film will be accepted at the event or donate here: https://www.twn.org/support-us. Scroll down to see all the films TWN sponsors and Pick What Happened to Danny - ManSee Kong.
