Know Your History: Mabel Lee - A Woman of Our Time
A Talk with Bayer Lee in Celebration of Women's History Month
Event Description: Who is Dr. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee? She is known as a suffragist at the turn of the 20th century, when Chinese immigrants couldn't vote. She was the first Chinese immigrant woman in the U.S. to receive a PhD in Economics. She also held many roles in Manhattan's Chinatown as a community activist, scholar, feminist, religious leader, and, perhaps paradoxically, a woman devoted to preserving the traditions of Chinese culture.
Join us for a presentation and Q&A with Reverend Bayer Lee to understand Mabel Lee's life and accomplishments, as well as delve into deeper insights about who she was as a person.

About the speaker: Since 2004, Reverend Bayer Lee (no relation to Mabel Lee) has been the pastor of the First Chinese Baptist Church in Chinatown - the same church that Mabel Lee established in memory of her father at 21 Pell Street. He is also a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Columbia University Teachers College where he received his Ed.D. in 2013. His research there was funded by a Fulbright Grant in 1993, and his interests include spatial memories and housing studies, Hakka and Taishan ethnographies, and the formation of New York City's Chinatown. A scholar of many interests, Reverend Lee has devoted considerable time researching Mabel Lee and has spoken about her at several community and research forums.
