THE CHINESE QUESTION & THE AMERICAN ANSWER
A Talk with Chris Kwok about Discrimination Against the Chinese in America
Chris Kwok is an attorney and community organizer who has been active in speaking about anti-Asian violence and harassment. Among the programs this year are: a panel sponsored by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association on the history of using public health concerns to justify anti-Asian sentiments, a town hall discussion with Alvin Bragg, former Chief Deputy at the New York State Attorney General's Office, on multi-racial coalition building to combat all types of hate crimes, a panel for the Asian American Arts Alliance where he discussed the rise in COVID-19 hate crimes and the role of Asian American artists in retelling the lost narratives of the APIA community, and a panel for the Thomson Reuters Asian Affinity Network about the need to build consciousness and address anti-Asian sentiments in discussions about diversity and inclusion.
Chris is the Co-Chair of the Issues Committee and Asia Practice Committee for the Asian American Bar Association of New York and serves on the board of the Asian American Federation. He served on the White House Initiative on Asian American and Pacific Islanders and was the founding chair of the Asian American Pacific Islander Network at the US EEOC.
Chris and his family left China in 1979 and settled in Flushing. At Cornell University, he focused on Chinese history and Asian American studies and developed an interest in civil race theory. At UCLA Law School, he was able to study with leading Critical Race academics and served as an editor of the Asian American Pacific Law Journal. He worked as a mediator in the New York District Office of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for 15 years. He is currently a mediator of labor and employment disputes at JAMS (f/k/a as Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services, Inc., an organization providing alternative dispute resolution services).
