THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MOTHER’S LOVE
A Talk with Founder Kit Ying Chan
When Kit Ying Chan, a young Hong Kong woman in her 20s, walked into a state orphanage in Guangxi Province in 1992, it changed her life forever. Drawn to the call of the needs in infant and child care, she founded Mother’s Love—China’s first joint-venture between a local provincial government and a Hong Kong nonprofit—and developed a pioneering foster care program that brought a Chinese community together to care for its most vulnerable.
The Mother’s Love program—which trained caregivers to nurture with love, introduced advances in nutrition, medical care, and a bold embrace of the challenge of significant special needs—left a legacy of hope and healing for thousands of infants, children, caregivers, nurses, parents, and families over the next three decades.
As a designated orphanage approved for foreign adoption, Mother’s Love brought families to more than 1,400 Chinese children, most of whom were adopted into the United States. Now, nine years after its closure, Kit Ying Chan looks back on the life and legacy of the work of Mother’s Love, from its early development in answer to a humanitarian crisis, to its role as a provincial model and training ground for child-centered care, which lives on among caregivers in Guangxi’s social welfare system.
Kit Ying’s book, Hidden Treasures, A Letter to the Children of Mother’s Love (2020), is a gift to the children whose lives were touched by this special place. Kit Ying will talk about the book and her personal story, directly address adoptees, and answer our questions. Whether you are an adoptee or parent with ties to Mother’s Love, or simply have an interest in the history of China adoption from a unique, on-the-ground perspective, you won’t want to miss this talk!
The program is free but you must register to receive the Zoom link.
