8:00-8:30pm Learn about Pact Camp East
Join us for film screening and talk about race and adoption from the point of view of youth adoptees followed by an optional informational session about Pact’s inaugural 5-day East Coast Camp for families with adopted children of color.
Too often in the child welfare field the adoptee perspective is subordinated to that of the adoptive parent. However, adopted and fostered people have first hand knowledge and are the truest experts on their own lived experience. As children grow, their understanding of adoption and sensitivity to the role played by race in our society changes. We will screen Pact’s film, Adoptees Speak, that captures the perspective of adopted and fostered youth of color ages ten to seventeen. Followed by a discussion with Jake Plut, one of the youth in the film, and Beth Hall, a transracial adoptive parent whose children are now adults and an expert in the field. They will offer concrete suggestions for conversations and actions that parents can initiate to break the racial and adoption sound barrier in their families.
About Our Speakers
Beth Hall is an adoption educator who co-founded Pact, An Adoption Alliance, a multicultural adoption organization dedicated to addressing essential issues affecting adopted children of color. Beth is also the founder of Pact Family Camp, a groundbreaking educational program to serve adoptees of color, adoptive families, birth families aand their allies
Jake Plut is a domestic transracial adoptee, a composer and writer. He records, releases and performs many styles of music.
